[ Géographie et développement durable: Un mariage épistémique pour un couple hypothétique ]

This article examines the epistemological articulations between geography and sustainable development (SD) in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015. As a global normative framework for a prosperous yet sustainable world, the SDGs, when confronted with the challenge of their territorialization, revive the idea of a «Geography of Sustainable Development» (GSD), a notion debated since the 2000s but which seems to have remained stagnant despite intersections around the human–nature relationship, the question of scale, and systemic approaches. Why this reluctance to affirm a GSD? Does the territorialization of the SDGs provide a new analytical lens for geography? What contributions can geographers make to the implementation of the SDGs? Rather than claiming the existence of a GSD, our aim is to highlight the relevance of geography in scaling the 2030 Agenda. This work draws on a critical review of the literature, an analysis of global and national reports, as well as data from a doctoral thesis and interviews conducted in 2024 and 2025 within the framework of a postdoctoral fellowship supported by the Global Development Network (GDN). The findings highlight the enduring presence of SD in geography, the significant role of geographical objects in the territorial anchoring of the SDGs, and territorialization as an approach that gives meaning to a GSD.

Cet article examine les articulations épistémologiques entre géographie et le développement durable (DD) dans le contexte des Objectifs de Développement Durable (ODD) adoptés par les Nations Unies en 2015. Cadre normatif global pour un monde prospère mais durable, les ODD, confrontés à l’enjeu de leur territorialisation, ravivent l’idée d’une « Géographie du Développement Durable » (GDD), agitée depuis les années 2000 mais qui semble être figée malgré les croisements autour des rapports Homme/Nature, de l’échelle et de l’approche systémique. Pourquoi cette « réticence » à affirmer une GDD ? La territorialisation des ODD, constitue-t-elle une nouvelle grille de lecture pour l’analyse géographique ? Quel apport des géographes pour la mise en œuvre des ODD ? Plutôt que d’affirmer une GDD, notre objectif est de souligner la pertinence de la géographie dans la mise à l’échelle de l’agenda 2030. Ce travail mobilise une revue critique de la littérature, une analyse des rapports mondiaux, nationaux, ainsi que des données issues d’une thèse doctorale et d’entretiens réalisés en 2024 et 2025, dans le cadre d’un post doctorat appuyé par Global development Network (GDN). Les résultats mettent en évidence, la permanence du DD en géographie, le rôle important des objets géographiques dans l’ancrage territoriale des ODD et la territorialisation comme approche donnant sens à une GDD.
